Khneg Sidi Brahim rubber dam
The purpose of this hydraulic structure constructed on the Sebgag river near the village of Gueltat Sidi Saad (in the Laghouat region) is to retain and store water for irrigating agricultural land in the areas downstream the hydraulic structure. The size of area that can be irrigated is approximately 400-600 hectares.
The axis of this newly constructed hydraulic structure with a movable weir structure is approx. 20m above the original, fixed weir, which was built in the 1970s as concrete and gabion-type masonry. The original weir was completely silted and, as a result, it burst during the extreme flood event in June 1978.
Project description
The hydraulic structure consists of a reinforced concrete dam with a rubber dam structure and handling manholes.
Individual parts of the rubber dam:
• 12 mm thick rubber tube dam reinforced with textile inserts: (2 sections 25 m long and 3 m high)
• The fixing profiles used to fix the rubber-textile dam to the lower structure of the reinforced concrete dam
• All mechanical equipment of the handling manholes and pipelines required to fill and empty the rubber dam structure
• All electro-technological equipment needed to control the rubber dam structure and provide remote transmission of information
• Sources of energy: 60 kW diesel generators (1 operational and 1 backup); solar panels powering the control system
• Provisional stop planks
The entire system installed the weir operates in automatic mode.
